Powered by Sun: our new solar house signs
We've been working on this one for a while, and it's finally here: a custom house sign that lights itself.
No wiring. No power point. No electrician. It charges from daylight during the day, and from dusk your street number glows on the wall.
How it works
A solar panel is built into the face of the sign. Through the day it charges an internal battery. At dusk, a white panel behind the face lights up, and your street number and street name — cut right through the front layer — glow clearly from the street.
That last part is the bit we're most pleased with. The lettering isn't printed or stuck on. It's cut through the front panel on our own laser, so the light comes through the letters themselves.
It needs real sunlight
Worth saying plainly, because it decides whether this sign is right for you: it needs 5 to 8 hours of direct sun a day on the panel.
A wall that gets good afternoon sun is ideal. A shaded wall, a deep eave, or a spot under trees is not — the panel won't charge properly and the sign won't light through the night. If that's your position, our non-lit acrylic and stainless signs will serve you far better, and we'd rather tell you that now than after it's on your wall.
What you choose
-
Base colour — matte black or matte grey
-
Lettering — white, illuminated
-
Cut — in-depth, so your address is cut through to the lit panel behind
-
Mounting — commercial-grade double-sided tape, or our invisible standoffs
The panel that lights up is white, so the lettering is white — that's what glows. A coloured or mirrored letter would block the light rather than carry it, which is why the solar range doesn't offer them.
Three sizes, available now
You can see the whole range on the Solar House Signs page.
A portrait version is finished and in stock, and will follow shortly — we're waiting on photography before we put it up.
Warranty
Three years structural on the sign, and two years on the solar panel, battery, LED and control board.
One honest note on that: a gradual reduction in how long the sign stays lit each night is normal battery ageing rather than a fault. Every solar-powered anything does it. A sign that stops charging or stops lighting altogether inside the two-year period is a defect, and that's covered.
Made the way the rest of our signs are
The acrylic face is designed, laser cut and assembled in our studio — every layout measured, spaced and checked by us before cutting. Same as every other custom sign we make.
